Chloe Grace Moretz is Ariel in Disney's live-action film "Little Mermaid."

Disney's upcoming live-action film "Little Mermaid" has found its Ariel.

According to Variety, Chloe Grace Moretz is set to play the titular role in Disney's "Little Mermaid." She is known for Matthew Vaugh's action comedy "Kick-Ass," Martin Scorsese's adventure film "Hugo," Jeff Wadlow's action comedy "Kick-Ass 2," and Antoine Fuqua's action thriller "The Equalizer."

Aside from "Little Mermaid," Moretz is also set to be part of Sacha Gervasi's crime drama "November Criminals," J Blakeson's sci-fi thriller "The 5th Wave," Nicholas Stoller's comedy film "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising," and Gerard Barrett's drama film "Brain on Fire."

The original storyline for the "Little Mermaid" basically centers on Ariel and her friends, as she wishes to become human after falling in love with a man she has saved from drowning. With the story being retold a number of times, it is assumed that Disney's new iteration of the mermaid tale is going to add unique elements. In fact, the upcoming canon was inspired by a children's puppet production, as per Cinema Blend.

"Lost in Translation" filmmaker Sofia Coppola was set to helm the film; however, she dropped her directorship due to creative differences, a common reason circling other directors who have left their seat at directors of certain films. "Love Actually" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral" screenwriter Richard Curtis is being tapped to pen the script for "Little Mermaid."

Disney has achieved a new milestone with the success of its live-action films like "Alice in wonderland," "Maleficent," and "Cinderella." Aside from "Little Mermaid," the House of Mouse has also revealed its plan of doing live-action adaptations for a number of its classic tales, including "Beauty and the Beast," "Jungle Book," "Mulan," "Pinocchio," "Winnie the Pooh," and "The Sword In The Stone," among others.

With Disney's "Little Mermaid" in its early phase of development, exact details on the plot, characters, cast, director, and release date are yet to be revealed.
