Stephen Chow is known for his comedy films "Kung Fu Hustle" and "Shaolin Soccer."

Stephen Chow, along with cast and crew, promoted his upcoming film "The Mermaid" during a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

Chow unveiled four posters and one teaser trailer for the film at the event.

Chow quoted a section of a Mao Zedong poem on the poster.

"Four seas are writhing while clouds and waters show anger / five continents are shaking while the wind and thunder demonstrate agitation," Chow said, adding that while he did not quite understand what Mao was saying, he felt the poem fit the film's quality.

"The film is invincible, and we are invincible," said Chow, "and the story is invincible, but being invincible is being lonely. However, after you see the film, you will not feel alone."

The film has been in the works for three years, being highly secretive. The posters and the trailer have given people a sneak peak, but they have yet to know the plot or see a single mermaid in any of the promotional materials.

"Doing film is more and more difficult," said Chow. "I have to work on the script for a long time, and I also have to work on a great many visual effects. So, the last three years were actually rather short and passed so fast."

The film stars Lin Yun, Deng Chao, Show Lo, Kris Wu Yifan, Zhang Yuqi, Li Shangzheng and Zhang Mei'e. The film is set to hit Chinese screens on Feb. 8, 2016.

"The Mermaid" will be released in time for lunar Chinese New Year. It will face competition from several other blockbusters, including "The Monkey King 2," "The Man From Macau" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny."
