Columbia Pictures will present iconic 2004 Chinese film "Kung Fu Hustle," starring famous Hong Kong actor and director Stephen Chow, in a 3D rerelease this Yuletide season.
On Dec. 24, 2014, Mandarin and Cantonese versions of the world-renowned martial arts film will be released to mark its 10th anniversary.
The press release from the entertainment company revealed that the classic movie had been enhanced and reconstructed into 3D with additional visual and upgraded sound effects.
"It is not just a restoration, but also a comprehensive enhancement," it stated.
The commemorative project is a joint effort of Columbia Pictures, the China Film Group and the Huayi Brothers.
First released in 2004, the "Kung Fu Hustle," which was co-produced and co-directed by the popular martial arts actor, was the last movie that stars Chow in the lead role.
Dubbed as the highest grossing movies in the history of Hong Kong's film industry, it garnered over 170 million yuan in mainland China, HK$61.27 million in Hong Kong, $17 million in the U.S. and $101 million worldwide.
It also earned up to 90 percent "fresh" score out of 166 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and was given six major awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards and five at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards.
"Kung Fu Hustle" will be the second Stephen Chow film to be rereleased following the actor's cult classic comedy "A Chinese Odyssey," which was released in October 2014, 20 years after its original release.
The 3D-enhanced movie is expected to create a much bigger impact because of its scheduled release during the Christmas season and promotion like a new movie.
