Roland Emmerich's “Independence Day: Resurgence” hits theaters on June 24.

"Suicide Squad" actor Will Smith voiced his thoughts on the death of his character in Roland Emmerich's 1996 action sci-fi film "Independence Day."

In his interview with Yahoo, Smith said that it had been terrible when he had found out that his character had died in Emmerich's "Independence Day." Smith played the role of Captain Steve Hiller in the film and in the "Independence Day" story timeline, the character reportedly died prior to the events of Emmerich's sequel, "Independence Day: Resurgence."

While Emmerich's "Independence Day" was a hit way back 1996, Smith turned down the chance to reappear in "Independence Day: Resurgence." According to Cinema Blend, Smith's legacy would definitely live on in the forthcoming film.

Along "Independence Day: Resurgence," Smith is also set to appear in Edward Zwick's "The American Can," David Frankel's "Collateral Beauty," Joe Carnahan's "Bad Boy 3," and David Ayer's "Suicide Squad."

Set twenty years following the frst Independence Day invasion, "Independence Day: Resurgence" centers on the Earth, facing a new extra-Solar threat. In line with this danger, only brave men and women can save the world. The film stars Joey King, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsburg, Vivica Fox, Bill Pullman, and Sela Ward, among others.

With Emmerich at the helm of the film, "Near Death" and "Good vs Evil" writer Carter Blanchard is on board to pen the screenplay. Carsten Lorenz, Amy Greene Vines, and Marc Weigert are set to co-produce the film.

"Independence Day: Resurgence" is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on June 24.
