J.J. Abrams' space sci-fi film "Star Wars: Episode VII" cannot be stopped from awakening the Force, as its gross soared to $1.16 billion.
Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" continues to be Disney's deal of the century, as it grossed more than $571 million in the United States and more than $589 million in other countries, after its release in 4,134 theaters on Dec. 18, according to Box Office Mojo. This serves as a major leap from the $1 million gross record it made on Dec. 27.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" now stands as the fifth film in the entertainment industry to cross $600 million domestically, folloing James Cameron's "Titanic" in 1997 with $658.7 mllion and "Avatar" in 2009 with $760.5 million, Joss Whedon's "The Avengers" in 2012 with $623.4 million, and Colin Trevorrow's "Jurassic World" in June with $652.3 million.
At the moment, the seventh installment of the "Star Wars" film franchise is going up the chart of top-grossing titles of all time.
On Dec. 28, "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" grossed more than $39.4 million internationally for a foreight total of $589.7 million, placing it at the tenth spot. It followed Peter Jackson's 2003 "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," Sam Mendes' 2012 "Skyfall," and Michael Bay's 2014 "Transformers: Age of Extinction," among others.
Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is set 30 years after the events in the "Return of Jedi." The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Max von Sydow, Simon Pegg, Oscar Isaac, and Domhnall Gleeson, among others.
Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is now showing in theaters.
