California-based mobile phone and wireless internet service provider FreedomPop announced Wednesday that customers can now take advantage of unlimited internet access through Wi-Fi hotspots across the United States for just $4.99 per month, Tech Crunch reported.
FreedomPop, a Mobile Virtual Network Operator known for delivering free data and cellular service through Sprint's network, is said to steal and is convincing consumers to move away from known expensive mobile carriers, such T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T, by unveiling this low-cost nationwide Wi-Fi plan.
The new plan may be beneficial on-the-go though, according to Information Week, there are some restrictions that a consumer still needs to consider before falling for FreedomPop's offer. Some of these restrictions includes: the service totally depends on Wi-Fi connection, it is only available for Android users and it is not compatible with unlocked GSM phones, to name a few.
The new plan is initially rolled out for Android users although FreedomPop's CEO and Co-founder Stephen Stokols told Tech Crunch that iOS App for the service is still in the works and added that users will be able to take advantage of it in a few weeks time. For Windows phone users, they will not be able to benefit from it as FreedomPop does not have any plans on rolling out a Windows phone version.
For the service to work, Android users would need to download and install FreedomPop's app. The app will then automatically and securely connects to FreedomPop's Wi-Fi hotspots and once connected, subscribers will then be able to make voice calls, send text messages and surf the web.
It is said that the service will work on places such as Home Depot, Walmart, McDonald's, Starbucks, Burger King, public Wi-Fi zones in major cities, according to GigaOm, Stokols confirmed that the service will not work with Boingo, Wi-Fi services provider in a lot of airports.
