Ten days after its release in the North American movie market, the film “Kung Fu Panda 3” grossed $69 million despite it being a Super Bowl weekend.
The movie was estimated to earn $21 million from ticket sales in Canada and the U.S., reported Global Times which cited data from Rentrak, a box-office tracker.
In China, the DreamWorks Animation movie’s total reached $101.7 million after it added $15.4 million over the weekend. Outside China, “Kung Fu Panda 3” earned $4.3 million in South Korea on its second weekend and $2.8 million in Russia, reported Cartoon Brew.
The movie is considered a modest hit for the film company, which the entertainment website pointed out cannot afford another flop at the moment. However, in comparison to the original “Kung Fu Panda” movie, Part 3 pales since it attracted less than 50 percent of the movie’s original viewers.
In the case of its weak performance in China, it could be explained by the Chinese Lunar New Year festivities when most families opted to stay home and eat sumptuous meals on the eve of the Spring Festival rather than watch movies.
The second-placer movie in the North American film market is “Hail, Caesar” by Universal. The film earned $11.4 million. Next were “The Revenant” ($7.1 million), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($6.9 million), “The Choice” ($6 million), “Pride And Prejudice and Zombies” ($5.2 million), “The Finest Hours” ($4.7 million), “Ride Along 2” ($4.5 million), “The Boy” ($4 million) and “Dirty Grandpa” ($4 million).
