While the psychological thriller "The Boy Next Door" starring Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Guzman is doing well in the box office despite negative reviews, the action comedy "Mortdecai" starring Johnny Depp is not earning as much as it is expected.
Topping the box office on the fourth weekend of January is Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper" starring Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper with $64.4 million locally and $17.6 million internationally. In second place is "The Boy Next Door" with $15 million locally and $560,000 internationally.
The animation film "Paddington" ranked number three with $12.4 million locally and $4.3 million internationally followed by "The Wedding Ringer" starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad and "The Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting with $11.6 million locally and $1.1 million internationally.
Earning $4.1 million locally and $5.2 million internationally, "Mortdecai" also failed to beat "Taken 3," "The Imitation Game," "Strange Magic" and "Selma."
While "Mortdecai" is at number nine, at number 10 is "Into the Woods," which also stars Depp alongside Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, James Corden and Oscar nominee Meryl Streep.
As for "American Sniper," it and is up for six Academy Awards. Topping the box office for a second weekend in a row, the Chris Kyle biopic surpassed "Avatar" as biggest January opening for a film and the top grosser among Academy Award Best Picture nominees.
Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said "American Sniper" is helping to "propel the box office," which is already 9.3 percent ahead of the same time in 2014, Start Tribune reported.
Before "Mortdecai," Depp also starred in films that flopped including "Transcendence," "The Lone Ranger," "Dark Shadows" and "The Rum Diary."
For Dergarabedian, Depp "chooses projects that appeal to him" but he still needs to "get audiences in the door."
