Chinese citizens traveling to Canada must remove sensitive data or illegal content, including lewd image on their devices so they would not be deported back to China, the Chinese Embassy in Toronto warned.
The embassy issued the warning after two Chinese students were sent back to the mainland after they were caught with pornographic materials on their gadgets. The giveaway to lewd content on their mobile phone were stickers that showed children in sexual acts.
When the Canadian customs examined their mobile devices, they found obscene content on their WeChat accounts, reported Global Times. WeChat is a messaging app popular among Chinese students and youth.
The “iask-ca” official account on the WeChat social network, in a post on Sunday, shared what happened to the two students who entered Canada separately. The incident made Chinese netizens question on local social media if Canada violated the privacy of the two students by examining their gadgets. But the embassy replied that the Canada Border Service Agency, under its code of conduct, has the right to go through the electronic devices of foreign visitors, reported Guancha.
Canadian laws require jail sentence between six months and 14 years for any person caught making, possessing, distributing and accessing child porn. However, the law exempts people if they view porn for art, education, science and medicine research.
Canada has applied the law also on its nationals like the Quebec man who was charged in January 2015 with three offences versus the Customs Act after child porn was found on his laptop. Similar incidents happened on Jan. 25 on a Saskatchewan man and on Jan. 7 on a Manitoba man, reported Global News.
