LG stole the MWC 2016 show by unveiling its new modular G5 flagship smartphone.
The Korean-based company launched its G4 flagship during the summer of last year, which has a lovely leather finish, good display, a great camera and is much affordable. The South Korean smartphone maker has now unveiled G4's successor - the LG G5 - that has a very different modular design.
The LG G5 has a fantastic modular design with a full metal body and the back cover is fixed. It has a button on its lower left edge that unlocks the module mechanism where it can be pulled out of the phone along with the battery. Over the back, there is also a dual camera module and a round fingerprint sensor.
On the other hand, the LG G4 has a 5.5-inch Quad HD LCD display with a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1440 and pixel density of 534ppi, while LG G5's screen size has been reduced to 5.3-inch and other display specifications have been retained from G4. LG G5 also comes with a Snapdragon 820 chipset and Adreno 530 GPU. It has a 4GB RAM and the battery pack has been reduced to 2800mAh compared to G4's 3000mAh. The micro SD slot can support storage of 2TB that is massive and a great addition in LG G5.
The camera module is definitely an upgraded version of G5 as the G4's 16MP rear camera has been replaced with two cameras on G5 - one has a 16MP sensor and the other is an 8MP, accompanied by 135 degree field vision through wide angle lens. The camera is also equipped with optical image stabilization.
Various modules, called friends, can be put into the battery slot. These friends include LG Hi-Fi Plus and Cam Plus. Cam Plus is the camera module that extends the battery capacity to 4000mAh for longer snapping, along with an auto focus with shutter button and a super zoom.
The Hi-Fi Plus, on the other hand, has a headphone socket with a 32-bit DAC and an amplifier that increases the sound quality, in addition to the 24-bit DAC already on G5. The G5 also comes with a reduction in the number of pre-installed apps and the home screen has been made to look less crowded and sophisticated.
LG G5 also runs on Android Marshmallow while G4 was originally published on an older version of Android, but got a software update recently. The app tray has been removed to provide simpler hands-on experience.
The LG G5, as a whole, looks more like a whole new handset rather than an upgraded version of G4.
