Full-fledged welterweight Nate Diaz just proved that size matters as the Californian bad boy went on to pull off a huge upset by submitting Conor McGregor with a rear-naked choke in the main event of UFC 196 at MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Diaz, who entered the octagon as a huge underdog against the crowd-pleasing McGregor, braved through a nasty cut he suffered in the first round to shock the world by forcing the proud Irish fighter to tap out at 4:12 mark of the second round.
Despite blood flowing profusely from his right cheek, Diaz continued to trade heavy blows with McGregor.
Diaz finally showcased his extensive jujitsu background by capitalizing on a failed takedown attempt by McGregor. Being the bigger man, the Stockton native managed to put himself in right position to lock McGregor with a rear choke.

Here's Sherdog's play-by-play moments before McGregor tapped out: "McGregor shoots for a takedown, gets snared in a guillotine and twists underneath Diaz to get free. The escape leaves Diaz in side control, and now he passes straight over to full mount. McGregor rolls to his belly, giving up his back, and Diaz wastes no time applying a tight rear-naked choke. McGregor taps out almost immediately, and this one is over. Nate Diaz may have just pulled off the biggest upset of 2016, submitting Conor McGregor in thesecond round."
Diaz collected his 19th MMA victory and a cool $1M, including his shares from PPV buys. McGregor, meanwhile, tasted his first defeat in the octagon, but will still take home with a fatter paycheck (between $6million to $7million) because of his PPV contract with UFC.
The #RearNakedChoke had a pretty good seat tonight!
Diaz’s shocking win capped off a night of upsets with Miesha Tate winning the UFC women’s bantamweight championship after forcing Holly Holm to tap out again with rear-naked choke at 4:12 mark of the fifth round.
