Ryan Daniel Montgomery, 38, who is professionally known as Royce da 5'9", recently talked about how he gave up alcohol. He revealed that "Rap God" rapper Eminem has something to do with it.
"That happened Sept.12, 2012," Royce da 5'9" explained in an interview with Complex. "I like to call it a spiritual awakening."
According to Royce da 5'9", he just woke up one day feeling like he "was just up" and made the necessary phone calls. He said he called Eminem at the time and told him about his desire to stop drinking.
Eminem then told Royce da 5'9" that it was "the realest thing" he had ever said to him, the latter revealed. From there, the former helped the latter check into a hospital and since then, the latter has not drunken alcohol drink although he admitted that it was not an easy journey.
For Royce da 5'9", it has been "really challenging" as an artist because he was used to drinking alcohol when he goes to the studio to help stimulate his creative juices. He said thoughts do not always hit him right away.
The two rappers are both from Detroit, Michigan. As a duo, they are collectively called Bad Meets Evil.
On Feb. 23, 1999, Eminem released his second studio album titled "The Slim Shady LP" under Interscope Records and Dr. Dre's record label Aftermath Entertainment. It has 20 tracks, one of which is the collaboration song "Bad Meets Evil."
Royce da 5'9" is set to release "Layers," his sixth studio album as a solo artist. One of the songs from the album is titled "Tabernacle."
It appears that Eminem is the inspiration of the song. Royce da 5'9" recently annotated the lyrics of "Tabernacle" on Genius.
"This is a story that I've been waiting to tell my whole career and I was just waiting on the right time to tell it," Royce da 5'9" explained. "This is a story about December 29th: The day that I met Eminem, the day that my grandma died and the day that my son was born. It all happened on the same day. It was a turn of events day."
In 2011, the Bad Meets Evil duo collaborated with Bruno Mars in the song "Lighters." Watch the music video here:
