Authorities have already approved a design for the planned national park that would be established in the cradle of the Yangtze, Lancang and Yellow rivers in the northwest province of Qinghai.
According to Qinghai's Forestry Department Chief Engineer Wang Enguang, a design for the park that would be erected in the Sanjiangyuan region has been completed by a design firm under the supervision of the State Forestry Administration.
Measured to cover about 30,000 square kilometers of land, the park would run through the three rivers along the Zhidoi, Madoi and Zadoi counties.
After receiving the go signal, construction of the park might begin as early as December this year.
The location was chosen because of its flora and fauna that are considered of "extremely high scientific value," the chief engineer declared.
"Sanjiangyuan, which is home to more than 70 animal protected species, has a highland ecosystem comprising glaciers, meadows and wetlands. It has an extremely high scientific value," Wang explained.
However, he also noted how global warming, climate change and human activity had affected its beauty, further leading to the deterioration of the natural environment.
Because of this, the Chinese government decided to build the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve in 2000 in an attempt to repair Sanjiangyuan's fragile ecosystem.
Aside from this, a conservation project worth 7.5 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) was introduced to the region in 2005.
In January, the second phase of the conservation project was launched with a total investment amount of 16 billion yuan (about $2.6 billion).
