PlayStation 4K is getting a possible launch before the official breaking out of PSVR, which is set to take place this October. The upgraded console is supposed to provide firepower for Sony's future VR Console, to compete in rising VR industry, expected to sell over 40 million VR/AR devices by 2020.
The all-new PlayStation VR is coming this October, but even better-PlayStation 4K might be released earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported. Previously rumored 4.5 version - now PS4K offering UHD resolution and better graphic fidelity - is going to be a competent upgrade compared to the currently available PS4 console.
The journal further reported that Sony, having sold over a mouth-watering 36 million units worldwide, will continue production of PS4 while the latest consoles would add to the range. Although, PlayStation 4K and PS4 do share core hardware components and software catalogue, but since there are few upgrades as well, users will have to buy the new console to add an additional kick to their gaming experience.
PlayStation 4K is also aimed at enhancing graphic capabilities of Sony's virtual reality console, which is going to face-off from already launched Oculus Rift and still-to-come HTC Vive. According to WSJ sources, PlayStation VR is focussed on enthusiast gamers who are ready to pay an out of the world gaming experience.
IHS research analyst Harding-Rolls says that Sony is actually going to do well in the VR market even after the late arrival. The success of electronic company's console-based VR offer has also the advantage of a lower price factor: PlayStation VR's $399 is a far more tempting deal compared to Rift's $599 and Vive's $799 price tag.
Macquarie Securities notes that Sony will sell eight million PlayStation VR headsets in the product's first two years on the market. Another research by Gartner reports that approximately 1.4 million VR and AR headsets will be sold word-wide in 2016, while by 2020 these numbers will soar to 40 million units.
At this time, 230 small and top-level developers including well-renown publishers like 2K Games and Ubisoft, and Electronic Arts are developing PSVR software--totaling 160 game titles, the Sony's official news site reported.
