The mega-hit Korean drama "Descendants of the Sun," also known as "DoTS," aired its finale on April 14, Thursday. The show starring Song Joong-ki (Yoo Si-jin), Song Hye-Kyo (Dr. Kang Mo-yeon), Kim Ji-won (Yoon Myeong-joo) and Jin Goo (Seo Dae Young) came to a close after earning record-breaking ratings. Meanwhile, fans are now wondering will there be a sequel or Season 2 coming soon. Read on for the detailed scoop.
"Descendants of the Sun" (DoTS) premiered on Feb. 24, Wednesday and soon became a household word. The show is said to be South Korea's most watched Hallyu drama in recent years. Last week, the show aired its finale (episode 16) and garnered 38.8 percent rating nationwide, according to Nielsen Korea. It became the number one drama among the dramas being aired at the same time. It even broke its own records. The finale ratings were four percent higher than the ratings for its penultimate (episode 15) segment.
In the meantime, several media outlets are speculating "Descendants of the Sun" (DoTS) might return with Season 2 given its open-ended finale and huge ratings. In addition, fans are hoping Song Joong-ki, Song Hye Kyo and other fan-favourite actors will reprise their roles for the follow-up.
However, an official announcement is yet to be made. Previously, "Descendants of the Sun" (DoTS) producer Lee Eung-bok talked about Season 2 of the show and revealed that the show may not return for a sequel. Speaking to Yonhap News Agency, he said that the follow-up might not be possible due to the cast members' busy schedules.
"Season 2 would be nice, but I don't know about its possibility," Lee said. "We'd have to keep all the main cast, whose schedules won't be easy to coordinate. We'd also need the two writers again, and that might be hard," he added.
Following the finale, "Descendants of the Sun" (DoTS) actor Song Joong-ki participated in a one-hour Q&A session where he thanked fans for loving the show and said that the show truly "belongs to audiences and not the actors." He even talked about all the things he learned as he played the main character Captain Yoo Si Jin's role.
"I learned a lot about how women love to be treated. The character explains about why female fans are so into this character. I particularly learned a lot about what women want to hear from their men, boyfriends and husbands," Song Joong-ki said as quoted by Yonhap News.
