Nintendo and Nickelodeon have joined forces to bring a "SpongeBob Squarepants" themed Splatfest into the "Splatoon" game hitting the North American and European players, as it kicks off at 6 am PT on March 23, running through 9 pm PT on April 24.
Nintendo has announced that the next Splatfest will ask players to choose which from two "SpongeBob SquarePants" characters they like best and eventually, take part in a series of battles against each other.
Nintendo of America's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Scott Moffitt, said that the upcoming tournament will unite the two family-friendly sensations.
"Two international pop culture sensations meet when the 'SpongeBob SquarePants' Splatfest comes to 'Splatoon," Moffitt said in a statement released by Nintendo. "Fun partnerships like this take advantage of the crossover appeal that the family-friendly franchises provide. Personally, I'm team SpongeBob all the way."
Splatfest is a recurring event in the game title, wherein players will be given 36 hours to contend head-to-head in team-based battles called Turf Wars. It has been reported that the in-game character will sport a free shirt embellished with an image of their chosen character.
At the end of the Splatfest competition, the Squid Sisters will officially declare the triumphant group taking into the total number of popular votes and in-game wins tallied for each faction. The group with the highest points is awarded Super Sea Snails, which can be used later to upgrade items and gears, IGN has learned.
The upcoming tournament marks the first Splatfest where players from Europe and North America can be matched together. To name a few, some of the previous popular Splatfest include "Pokémon Red" vs. "Pokémon Blue,"Transformer's" Autobots vs. Decepticons and Pirates vs. Ninjas.
The event is open to all Wii U proprietors, who have the game title and a stable Internet connection. Released worldwide in May 2015, "Splatoon" is a third-person shooter video game that centers on the creatures that can transform between humanoid and squid forms otherwise known as the Inklings.
