Viewers were treated to a surprise appearance from Wolverine when the final "X-Men: Apocalypse" trailer was released on Monday. The mutant's cameo hinted the return of Stryker's Weapon X program and teased the appearance of Weapon X Wolverine.

Wolverine appeared nearing the end of the final "X-Men: Apocalypse" trailer. Hugh Jackman, who plays Logan aka Wolverine, did not actually appear in character. However, there is no mistaking those familiar-looking claws belong to the legendary mutant. Jackman himself confirmed his involvement in the film on his Twitter page.

According to Cinema Blend, Wolverine’s appearance in the sequel to "X-Men: Days of Future Past" teased his origin will be told in the movie. It also hinted the inclusion of the Weapon X program, given that the movie is set in the 1980s. In the “X-Men” comics, it was during this timeline that Stryker started capturing mutants, so he can enhance their powers and subsequently mind-control them to do his bidding.

Additionally, actor Josh Helman is back as Stryker in "X-Men: Apocalypse." His appearance in the film further teased the inclusion of the Weapon X program in the movie.

According to Comicbook, fans should expect to see a Weapon X Wolverine appear in the film given the involvement of Stryker's Weapon X program. The mutant's cameo in the trailer further hinted his Weapon X origin story will be revealed in the sequel. In the comics, it was through Stryker's program that Wolverine got his bone claws replaced with metal claws.

Furthermore, the trailer hinted that Wolverine spent some time held captive at Stryker's facility, before Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) came along. The pair eventually rescued him and he returned the favor by helping them kill Stryker's men. Cyclops was probably referring to Wolverine, when he told Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) in the video below that they had a "little help."

Wolverine's cameo in Bryan Singer's film, which opens on May 27, is said to be connected to his appearance in "Wolverine 3." The still-untitled movie is said to be based on the "Old Man Logan" story, so having the mutant's origin told in "X-Men: Apocalypse" is a perfect way to introduce the new film.
