The final chapter of Rebuild of Evangelion is easily one of the most widely anticipated anime films this year. After three action-packed and mindboggling chapters, the popular mecha franchise is now down to one final film that would hopefully answer every question presented in the series.
Unfortunately, there's one major problem. More than three years since the Japanese release of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, Studio Khara hasn't yet announced the release date of the fourth and final theatrical film - Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0.
The film was originally scheduled for release last year, but the involvement of Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno, who has been the director and producer of the series, in the production of Godzilla: Resurgence pushed the premiere of the film to unknown date.
The development has somewhat turned off many of its fans, who have waited long enough to find out the conclusion they have been seeking from the series all this time.
When all hope for 2016 theatrical release of Evangelion 4.0 lost, a youtube video allegedly containing clips for the upcoming film has recently surfaced. Check it out below:
Evangelion Store JP posted the alleged hype video last April 17 and it apparently contains details of the film's release date: 10/27/2016. While the clips provides a glimpse of hope Evangelion 4.0 will hit the big screen this year, there's no telling if the video is legit or just fan-made.
Although there are some who believes it's legit since it shows Gendo harnessing Adam-liked power (A.T field), it's better to set the level of expectation at minimum. After all, Studio Khara and Anno haven't issued anything that would confirm the validity of the clip..
After the massive success of Neon Genesis Evangelion and its accompanied film the End of Evangelion, Anno took on another project with the purpose of giving both fresh and old audience a retelling of the original series. The first three films were surefire blockbuster, generating a combined gross revenue of roughly $120 million.
The fourth part of the post-apocalyptic, mecha franchise is expected to double the earnings of its predecessor Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo ($60M) largely because the film might finally answer the never-ending debate on whether or not the whole four-part series is a reboot or a grim continuation of the original series.
