The Houston Rockets are expected to undergo a significant overhaul this off-season as the team underachieved during the 2015-2016 season with a 41-41 record and a first round exit. Some even believe it is time to let go of All-Star guard James Harden.
The Rockets, after finishing as the second best team in the league last conference behind the Golden State Warriors, found themselves in an unusual position all season long. Team chemistry issues were so apparent and the firing of Kevin McHale did not do the team any favor. In fact, even interim head coach J.B. Bickerstaff was not able to do a thing to improve their situation.
Now eliminated from title contention, Rockets GM Daryl Morey should closely look at the core of James Harden and Dwight Howard, as their chemistry has deteriorated over the course of the season as former Rockets player Robert Reid said that Harden is not the leader that will bring them to the top.
Reid further added that Harden is only concerned about his stats to preserve his status as a star in this league. He also believes that it will be up to the next head coach to put Harden back in his rightful place and fix his demeanor.
"Harden is a tremendous player, but he's not bringing it for the team," ESPN quoted Reid saying. "I'm sorry, I'm just going to say it. Harden looks after Harden."
Despite the rumblings surrounding Harden, owner Leslie Alexander and Morey have made it clear that the bearded star is their franchise cornerstone. Hence, he will remain as a Rocket for a significant amount of time. However, that might not be the case for their star center.
Howard is now 30 year-old and his back issues are not getting any better. He will be a free agent this off-season and the team is leaning towards not signing the big man. Should this be the case, at least three teams are expected to go after the big man including his former team, the Orlando Magic, Brew Hoop reported. Meanwhile, other frontrunners for Howard's services are the Milwaukee Bucks, Charlotte Hornets and the Portland Trail Blazers.
Here are some highlights of Howard during his heydays with the Magic.
