With its $96 million opening weekend box office receipt in China, “Captain America: Civil War” stands a good chance of breaking the box office records of Disney and Marvel.
IBTimes reported that the superhero movie could break the record currently held by another Marvel movie in China, “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” It is the highest-grossing Marvel film in the Asian giant. The film could also eclipse the record held by No. 2 Disney movie, “Zootopia.”
In contrast, the other superhero made by Warner Brothers, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” did poorly in China and other markets.
“Zootopia” grossed almost $240 million in China, while another Disney movie, “The Jungle Book,” which is still showing, has so far earned for the movie company more than $140 million. Besides the four Disney films, the company founded by Walt Disney would surely laugh its way to the bank when Shanghai Disneyland opens on June 16 and attracts 15 to 25 million people on its first 12 months of operation.
In the past, China had criticized “Zootopia” and other American films as propaganda tools of the U.S., but Beijing even allowed Disney to use the same title in China which was approved by the country’s censor, while the movie company used “First Avenger” in Russia and South Korea, noted Jonathan Papish, an industry analyst at China Film Insider.
Including China, “Captain America: Civil War” earned $217 million in the sophomore session, reported Deadline. That would bring the movie’s international box office receipts to $494 million and globally to $673.1 million.
