Manchester United is currently contemplating on Real Madrid's offer to sell James Rodriguez to the English Premier League giants for £60 million in the summer.
Reports have recently emerged that perennial La Liga powerhouse Real, who had just finished second to back-to-back champions FC Barcelona in the Spanish top flight last weekend, is set to dangle Rodriguez to the Red Devils as soon as the English summer transfer window opens in July.
United has to break the current British transfer record, though, if ever they decide to acquire the 24-year-old Colombian, Caught Offside reported.
Rodriguez was snagged by Real from Monaco in the summer of 2014 for £63 million and they are allegedly willing to sell him at a loss this summer as they found him dispensable at the moment. However, the £60 million buyout clause is still set to break the £59.7 million transfer fee paid by Manchester to Real when the former signed Angel Di Maria in August 2014, according to the Daily Star.
The Colombia national team skipper, who is considered as one of the top young wingers in the world today, had struggled in his two seasons at the Bernabéu under Rafael Benitez and Zinedine Zidane. He only played 26 games out of the 38 fixtures of Los Blancos in the Spanish top flight this season and have scored a mediocre seven goals in the process. Last season, he scored 13 goals and appeared in 29 games under Benitez in La Liga.
Overall in all competitions, the 5-foot-11 Cúcuta, Colombia native had 25 goals in 78 appearances in his so far two-season stint with the Madrid club, below par numbers for someone of the Colombian's caliber, and things are looking to go downward for Rodriguez in the long run at the Bernabéu.
Much of Rodriguez's struggles is his playing second fiddle to the team's trio of forwards, namely Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, and Karim Benzema, which had quite limited his offensive chances. Another is his lower position in the pecking order of Real's midfield, which already has the superior talents of Toni Kroos, Isco, Luka Modric, and Casimero in the team's deep rotation.
Exiting the Bernabéu this summer is said to be the only way for Rodriguez to revitalize his straining career and choosing United as his possible destination could definitely bring good things to the drifting playmaker.
