Viewers saw a lot of things go down in "Once Upon a Time" Season 5. Fans travelled with Hook to the Underworld and back to life, and they also experienced heartbreak over the loss of one of the Storybrooke heroes.
Central to the two-hour season finale is Regina (Lana Parrilla) who mourns the death of her lover Robin Hood (Sean Maguire). Robin was killed by Hades in the penultimate episode, and in the finale, Regina and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) join forces to stop Henry (Jared Gilmore) from destroying magic.
Henry escapes with Violet to NYC where they take Hades' Olympian crystal in an attempt to destroy magic once and for all. He believes that magic has brought pain to those he loves. As they follow Henry in NYC, Emma and Regina have a rare heart-to-heart.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Parrilla described the event as "a moment between these two women where Regina takes the opportunity to share some deep fears and thoughts."
Amidst everything that has happened, Regina maintains a stoic appearance but it does not hide the internal struggle that is eating her up.
Speaking to "Good Morning America," Parrilla commented that Robin was one of a kind for Regina as he is the only person who has "demonstrated that much love" for her. Regina is also overwhelmed by his death and absolutely devastated.
That said, is this enough to bring back the evil in Regina?
Although Parrilla said it is going to take more than the loss of a boyfriend to push Regina back to her roots, it seems the contrary has unfolded.
By the end of the two-hour finale episode of "Once Upon a Time" Season 5, Regina uses a potion given by Mr. Hyde to separate her from her evil alter ego. After injecting herself with the potion, Regina rips out the Evil Queen's heart and squashed it.
While the people in Storybrooke believe that the Evil Queen is no more, little do they know that the Evil Queen has reappeared in NYC, where she rips out the heart of a man who was formerly a dragon. She then gives her most menacing smile and beckons, "the Evil Queen is back."
The return of the Evil Queen opens up a lot of possibilities for "Once Upon a Time" Season 6. Mr. Hyde is expected to return as the main baddie on "Once Upon a Time" Season 6, so it would be interesting to see how he would collide with the equally sinister Evil Queen.
