“Captain America: Civil War” continued its domination of the Chinese box office in the past week, adding another $60 million to its earnings on mainland China and making it the country’s sixth highest grossing film of the year.
Marvel's superhero blockbuster, which stars an ensemble cast including Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., has raked it $155.8 million in its first 10 days in cinemas, according to the Los Angeles Times, citing film industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway.
Running behind in second place for the past seven days ending Sunday was Edko Films' Chinese romance "Book of Love," which has earned $110.8 million following its release in late April. The movie, helmed by director Xue Xiaolu and stars "Blackhat" actress Tang Wei, has now surpassed the 2013 hit "So Young" to rank as the top-earning Chinese romance film of all time, Artisan said.
Meanwhile, fans of star Ryan Reynolds had their choice of two of the "Deadpool" actor's stateside bombs the previous week as the action thriller "Criminal" from Millenium Films and the 2015 sci-fi flick "Self/Less" from Endgame Entertainment opened in local cinemas. "Criminal" opened Friday and brought in $7.9 million through Sunday, while "Self/Less," which also stars Oscar winner Ben Kingsley, opened Saturday and earned $4.1 million over the weekend.
"Song of the Phoenix", the final film from the late, renowned Chinese director Wu Tianming, rounded out China's top five box-office performers with $3.8 million. The movie, which centers around a "suona" musician attempting to pass on his dying art and stars Peng Chi, Mincheng Li and Yang Mo, was completed just a month before Wu died of a heart attack in 2014 at the age of 74.
Also ending its run in the Middle Kingdom in the previous week, Disney's live-action adaptation of the "Jungle Book" finished in the territory with around $153 million, according to Artisan.
