Dominic Cooper plays Jesse Custer who is possessed by an entity that lets him command people. In an interview with USA Today, Cooper said that playing the character has been a challenge for him.
Jesse comes to his hometown Annville in order to lead his father's former church. He returns to fulfil the vow he made to his dad. However, it will not be easy for him with his ex-girlfriend Tulip by his side.
Cooper said that people tell Jesse that he is not as good as his father. "It's a barrage of abuse and he's not very good at it, which is why, when this entity turns up and he thinks that maybe for a moment there's a glimmer of hope and he might be the chosen one, he tries his hardest to do what he thinks is best. But unfortunately it's not the thing he thought it was," Cooper revealed.
In "Preacher" Season 1, episode 1, Jesse gets into a bar brawl with a churchgoer. The actor revealed that Jesse's childhood "was awful and he lost his way." He would have been a caring and loving man had he had a nurturing family.
