"Empire" Season 2 finale ended with a cliffhanger, with the Lyons once more entangled in a chaotic family affair. In Season 2 finale, Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) had a messy wedding, and Anika (Grace Gealey) and Rhonda (Katlin Doubleday) were involved in a catfight. Now, there is more expected for the entire cast in Season 3 with the return of Lucious' (Terrence Howard) half brother - Tariq (Morocco Omari).
As a reminder, in Season 2 finale, Laura (Jamila Velazquez) opted not to push through with the wedding. The decision emanated from her inability to embrace the type of family she would shortly be part. Lucious and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) brought a criminal to the nuptials, who had several hookers in his arms.
On the other hand, Shyne (Xzibit) was aware he could do anything given that he had Lucious in the right place. During the wedding, a court summon for Lucious was delivered, something that made Laura to burst into tears before running away.
Executive producer Ilene Chaiken said that Xzibit's character would be central in "Empire" Season 3. In an interview with Deadline, the producer said that apart from Shyne, fans should watch out for Tariq portrayed by Morocco, an FBI agent that has a personal grudge against the founder of Empire.
Chaiken said, "Well, Shyne Johnson is a character who was spoken of in the pilot and mentioned once or twice in Season 1 before, and we met him in the last episode of Season 2. Shyne is going to be a big character in our third season, as is Lucious' half-brother Tariq who happens to be a fed with a very, very personal agenda to finally be the one to make this case against Lucious Lyon and Empire."
Meanwhile, Tariq is perceived to be "extremely bright and supremely confident," according to TV Line. Tariq never shows his hand but does not hide his plans. In fact, he was a hero in Philadelphia, where he served before he joined the Bureau.
