The Brooklyn Nets are reportedly planning to snag point guard Brandon Jennings from the Orlando Magic in the summer as the team tries to strengthen their backcourt lineup next season.
Brooklyn currently has veteran Jarrett Jack as their starting floor general with Shane Larkin and Donald Sloan as the backups. The team finished second to the last place in the Eastern Conference in the most recent regular season with a disappointing 21-61 record.
With their current standing and a lack of superstar players, the Nets are not among the teams that big-name free agents could be attracted to in the offseason.
While they virtually need improvement in almost all of the starting five positions, except maybe at center where Brook Lopez is at the helm, the "major piece" that they are missing is said to be a reliable point guard, Fansided reported.
The 26-year-old Jennings is a realistic target for Brooklyn as the other upcoming free agent point guards - Rajon Rondo, Mike Conley, Ty Lawson, and Jeremy Lin are allegedly more inclined to join contending squads.
With Jennings, the Nets will get someone who just came back from an 11-month layoff in December of last year after recovering from a left Achilles tendon injury.
Before the injury, Jennings was considered as one of the best young scoring playmakers in the league, spearheading the Milwaukee Bucks to two playoffs appearances in four years with the club, Inquisitr noted.
As a rookie, he led Milwaukee in the first round of the 2010 playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks with averages of 18.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. They pushed Atlanta to the brink as they were eliminated in Game 7 of the said series.
At his age, several NBA analysts think that he still has his best years ahead of him despite his injury. However, it was also believed that Jennings will not be able to reclaim a starting spot in Orlando as the team is currently focusing on a rebuild with their young players headed by starting point guard Elfrid Payton.
With the Nets, Jennings can have the new beginning that he is looking for to revitalize his career. There is a high chance that he could become Kenny Atkinson's starter in Brooklyn if he joins them next season and the Nets are also more than capable in providing him the compensation the he deserves.
