With majority of gay Chinese still in the closet, it is not surprising that photos of a male homosexual couple in Renmin University would generate a lot of controversy. After all, majority of Chinese are also conservative when it comes to same-sex relationships.
On May 20, a male student of Renmin University in Beijing attracted other students because he publicly announced he loves another young male student from the same university. He did it while they were standing inside a lit heart-shaped design on the floor.
The first student then told his friend within hearing distance of the other students, “I will be with you, not to play basketball, but to kiss you,” quoted What’s on Weibo. He followed his profession of love with a kiss to his beloved.
Some of those who witnessed the incident took photos and posted it on Sina Weibo, the most popular microblogging site in China. As expected, netizens’ reaction to the images varied from negative to positive.
One described the incident as disgusting. Another netizen opined that gay people should seek help from a psychiatrist. One Weibo user commented, “They are a disgrace to the university and when their parents see this, they’ll faint.”
Others condemned the online bashing and discrimination on gay people. Some extended their blessing to the young same-sex couple. “Love goes beyond gender, bless you!” wrote on Weibo user. One student commented that if the two students would be kicked out by Renmin University for their show of love, he would really lose hope in Chinese universities, reported Towerload.
