In an interview with IGN, show producers Greg Plageman and Jonathan Nolan talked about Shaw and the show.
"We wanted something where we see that the attraction between these two characters has become undeniable this season," Plageman said about Root and Shaw.
"On both ends. And I think we deal with that in a really responsible manner. One that's very satisfying for our audience. We don't shy from it. Not just in this episode where she comes back, but in subsequent episodes was well." He added that for Shaw, emotions are hard.
"So we thought one of the best ways to show Root her feelings, to display how she feels inside, was to have her continuously not kill her in these simulations, over and over. She turns the gun on herself. There's something even more powerful to that."
