Geeks, get ready to grab your pointy ears, your swords and your green elf-hats, because the Wall Street Journal reported that the iconic video game "The Legend of Zelda" is being considered for a possible live-action series on Netflix.
The video game, introduced by Nintendo to the United States in 1987, follows the adventures of Link in the magical kingdom of Hyrule as he faces various enemies and attempts to rescue the princess Zelda.
The television series will presumably follow in the footsteps of one of the many incarnations of the game, as Netflix is working closely with Nintendo itself. "Zelda" is one of the most successful video game franchises in history, with 20 incarnations in the 30 years since the original was first introduced.
Nintendo, known for making best-selling video games, does not have a great track record with TV and film adaptations. The time this particular video game was on television was during a short-lived animated "Legend of Zelda" series, which ran for all of one season.
It may also be remembered that "Super Mario Brothers", another Nintendo video game hit, bombed spectacularly at the box office when it was adapted into a movie.
When asked by CNet, however, Nintendo was unavailable for comment.
Netflix, on the other hand, is known for giving birth to Emmy award-winning shows like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black". It has paved the way for tech companies to produce high quality original television programming and has blurred the line between television and online media.
