While Ginger Zee and partner Val Chmerkovskiy were not able to bring home the mirror ball trophy at the end of "Dancing With the Stars," the duo were still able to emerge winners against a big challenge they had to face at the end of the competition.
During the rehearsals, the weather anchor of "Good Morning America" suffered a pelvic injury that gave her back spasms. It was that bad she could not hold her 5-month-old baby. There was also a point that her therapist told her she had to stop and she can't dance anymore, for now, People reported.
Fortunately, the pain subsided and all the fears that she would fall on stage, on national television, with the whole of America watching, did not happen. Zee and Chmerkovskiy finished their three finale performances with all grace and earned praises from the judges and a combined score of 58.
"The back spasms are unfortunately a challenge we had to face, but we don't want to make any excuses. I don't think it's a big deal," Val, 30, told DWTS co-host, Erin Andrew. "This is our last week, we're gonna give it all we got and, you know, I'm proud of her."
Ginger Zee was able to surpass all the challenges with the support from her dance partner Val, her family and her colleagues at "Good Morning America." The ABC News personality said she turned out to be much stronger and more confident woman after her DWTS journey, which was emotionally and physically transforming. She said on GMA, "I have Val to thank for that, I have my family, my husband, my baby, it really changed who I am and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be next to all these amazing people," ABC News reported.
The 35-year-old chief meteorologist lost to Nyle DiMarco. While Zee placed third in the competition, she said she felt so lucky to become one of the final three and that she was satisfied with the deaf model winning the mirror ball trophy. Now that the DWTS was done, Zee is thrilled to be back in the morning action on "GMA."
