Since rumors regarding the Omen X circulated online, several reports regarding its updates and development were revealed bit by bit. The latest of these updates is that the VR PC backpack is capable of swapping batteries. Since the Omen X only have one hour of battery life, HP designed the batteries to be swappable without having to shut it down.
In terms of specifications, the VR PC backpack is similar to VR-ready desktop PCs which are most likely comprised of a new Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, memory of up to 32 GB with a still unknown graphics card, The Verge reported.
The same report described that the Omen X is packed into a slender pack which only weighs below 10 pounds. A pair of fans were installed to release heat with a waist belt included to pack the batteries that will power up both the CPU and graphics card separately.
In an interview with Tech Crunch, HP VP of Consumer PC & Solutions Mike Nash revealed that they have been learning several things on how consumers perceive the Omen X. He also said that they have been receiving two consistent types of feedback. He revealed that consumers have been positive about the demo item which they described as "incredibly cool." The not so positive feedback points how the cord is "incredibly annoying."
Nash added that despite the positive feedback, the existence of the cord limits the overall VR experience which may feel a little less real, in which he said, "But despite all of the demos, nobody has tripped over the cord. We wondered why this was and basically people are aware of the cord the whole time so they don't trip over it. In some sense it's kind of limiting the overall VR experience. It feels a little less real."
Since the Omen X is not yet out in the market, HP revealed that they will still be developing the said device and the prototype released now may still change in the future. The company explained that a prototype was released to attract other developers who may have other ideas that can still improve the Omen X.
