Nintendo will release on Feb. 10, Tuesday, a whole new update for its flagship video-game "Super Smash Bros.3DS" which will allow it to support Amiibo toys, according to an official statement from Nintendo Life.
Amiibo are miniature toys that have near-field communication capabilities and acts as storage devices for Nintendo consoles. The release of Amiibo support for the 3DS means that the handheld gaming system will allow its users to simply place their Amiibo toys within the range of the system in order to "warp" them into the virtual gaming world.
Nintendo's official statement regarding the release reads, "A free update will also be released on the 10th of February for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS that will enable amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. Collection to be used with the new systems."
So far, only the New Nintendo 3DS has NFC capabilities and many critics accuses Nintendo of its slow integration of the Amiibo to other handheld devices. Fortunately, Nintendo also announced that it is already developing a peripheral to other systems including the 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS in order to have NFC capabilities, according to Game Spot. Nintendo has yet to announce a release date and price list for the add-ons that will be released on these platforms.
Nintendo first announced its Amiibo program on November 2014. To date, Nintendo has sold more than 5.7 million Amiibo figurines worldwide. In comparison, Skylanders which is a product of Activision has already sold more than 240 million toys and this is acceptable in terms of Nintendo's perspective since the Activision's toys has been on the market for quite some time already.
