Starz's hit period piece "Outlander" has been picked up for two more seasons. The time travel-themed show will continue on with season 3 and 4 in the works.
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht made the announcement in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the U.S. publication of the first part in Diana Gabaldon's book series.
"'Outlander' is like nothing seen before on television," Albrecht said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. "From its depiction of a truly powerful female lead character to the devastating decimation of the Highlander way of life, to what is a rarely seen genuine and timeless love story, it is a show that not only transports the viewer but inspires the passion and admiration of its fans."
Although "Outlander" Season 2 is still on air, fans already have speculations about what's to come in Season 3. There are rumblings that Laoghaire MacKenzie's surprising return on the show could spell trouble for Jamie and Claire's romance in "Outlander" Season 3. If the books were to be followed, Laoghaire wasn't supposed to show up until the next book.
When Laoghaire returned in "The Fox's Lair" episode, she appeared to be very remorseful when asking forgiveness from Jamie and Claire. However, actress Nell Hudson said that her character still has a thing for Jamie.
"Her love for Jamie never [goes away]," Hudson told TV Line. She hinted that her character might have a change of heart in the upcoming season and pursue Jamie again in Claire's absence.
"Those who know what happens in [subsequent books], when Claire's not around, it's opportunistically a sure thing between Jamie and Laoghaire, in a way," she continued. "There's a sort of purity to Laoghaire's love for Jamie."
"Outlander" fans will not have to wait for long to watch "Outlander" Season 3. Producer Matt Roberts revealed that the show's writers are already developing the story for the third season 3, which will be based on the Gabaldon's novel "Voyager."
The "Droughtlander" won't be longer than expected, unlike the hiatus between the first and second seasons that took a whole year.
"Outlander" Season 4, on the other hand, will be based on "Drums of Autumn."
