"Empire" season 3 will finally see Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) moving on from her estranged husband Lucious (Terrence Howard).
In the previous episodes, Cookie and Lucious developed a close friendship with each other even though their marriage already fell apart so many years ago.
At one point, their second son Jamal (Jussie Smollett) asked his mom if she still has feelings for Lucious, but she said no.
In the finale episode for season 2, Cookie and Lucious' youngest son Hakeem (Bryshere Gray) was supposed to wed his fiancée. However, their marriage was cancelled at the last minute.
After the cancellation of their wedding, Lucious decided to take advantage of the wedding venue so he asked his ex-girlfriend Anika (Grace Gealey) to marry him. Anika agreed and the two tied the knot, but before they were able to do so, Cookie told Lucious that she's done with him.
In an interview with TV Line, executive producer Ilene Chaiken said that season 3 will revolve around Cookie moving on from Lucious completely.
"The family is together, the company is together, and Lucious and Cookie will be in one another's faces and lives, but her being finished with Lucious is going to color everything," she said.
Meanwhile, now that Lucious and Anika are married the couple will face new challenges their way.
Since Anika is pregnant with Hakeem's child, Lucious would have to assume the role of his own son's son's father. This would be especially difficult for both Hakeem and Anika, that is, if the latter will survive the brawl that she was involved in with Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday).
In the other news, Rhonda and Anika had a heated confrontation in the finale where the two physically assaulted each other while at the terrace on top of a high-rise building.
Just before the episode ended, Andre (Trai Byers) arrived at the room and saw his wife and Anika pushing each other. Andre let out a big scream seemingly indicating that one of the two women fell off the terrace.
As of late, it is still unclear whether or not it is Anika or Rhonda that will be killed off.
"Empire" season 3 will premiere on FOX sometime this year.
