It was recently rumored that Filipino actress Liza Soberano is playing Mary Jane Watson in "Spider-Man: Homecoming." A reboot of the "Spider-Man" franchise, the upcoming superhero film is the 16th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fourth installment of Phase Three.
"I would love that," Soberano said when asked in an interview with ABS-CBN News if she does get an offer to play the character previously played by Kirsten Dunst. "That would be a nice opportunity."
However, Soberano clarified that there was no offer from Marvel to star in the upcoming "Spider-Man" movie. The Filipino teen star said it was only her fans who suggested the idea and made it trend on Twitter.
Several Hollywood films have featured actresses of Filipino descent in a lead role including "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens. However, there has yet to be a Filipino actress to play a lead role in a Hollywood superhero film.
Written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, "Spider-Man: Homecoming" will be directed by Jon Watts. The role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man will be reprised by "Wolf Hall" alum Tom Holland after playing it in "Captain America: Civil War."
There are still no details about the actress who will play Mary Jane Watson in "Spider-Man: Homecoming." So far, the characters confirmed to be featured in the film are Tony Stark/Iron Man, Aunt Mary, Michelle and Manuel, which will be played by Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Zendaya and Tony Revolori.
New Yorker Michael Barbieri, 14, is making his debut in a superhero film in "Spider-Man: Homecoming," according to Heroic Hollywood. Among his co-stars aside from Holland, Downey, Tomei, Zendaya and Revolori are "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" actor Kenneth Choi and "4th Man Out" actress Laura Harrier.
The characters to be played by Barbieri, Choi and Harrier are still under wraps. Rumors claim that Academy Award-nominated "Birdman" actor Michael Keaton is joining the cast, as well.
Aside from "Spider-Man: Homecoming," Holland is also set to star in "Edge of Winter," "The Lost City of Z" and "Jumanji." Watch an interview with the actor here:
