AMD has not released the Radeon RX 480 yet but there is already a leaked photo showing the bare bones of the card showing the size of the die used in the Polaris 10 GPU.
Both the Radeon RX 480 and the RX 470 will use the same PCB but the latter will have a considerably less powerful performance with a cheaper price tag. The Radeon RX 460 has also been revealed to be the cheapest option which could probably shoot for at least $100.
NVIDIA and AMD have achieved better performance cards with cheaper price tags thanks to the advancement in the fabrication process. The latter has used their new 14nmFinFET method to produce the new line of Polaris 10 and 11 GPUs.
The leaked photo shows that AMD might have used a 220mm² die size for the Radeon RX 480, HEXUS has learned. It could also be around the same size as the previous R7 370 which performs almost the same as the 480 but is currently more expensive and draws more power.
No confirmation has been provided yet by the company. However, they did send out documents regarding the performance of the new Polaris 10 card which has been shown to be on par with NVIDIA's GTX 980 for a much cheaper price at $200.
With a smaller die size, the new GPU also has more improvements in terms of its specs. AMD Polaris 10 Radeon RX 480 has 36 compute units (CU) instead of the Tonga and Tahiti GPUs' 32, Videocardz reported.
The new GPU also has 256 more stream processors than the previous generation. Both the 480 and the RX 470 also draws less power at 150W TDP compared to the R9 285 with 190W and the HD 7970 at 250W but still has about the same or better performance overall.
Meanwhile, the specs of the Polaris 11 are still not quite revealed yet. It does have a significantly lower CU count at 16 and only 1024 stream processors with only 75W TDP.
AMD will release the Radeon RX 480 on June 29 with a price tag of $200 for the 4GB model. The RX 470 and the RX 460 does not have release dates yet but they are expected to be cheaper and better suited for budget-conscious PC gamers.
