Anton Yelchin, 27, is reprising his role as Chekov in "Star Trek Beyond," which will hit theaters on July 20. However, the actor died one day before the theatrical premiere of the film. He was killed in a freak accident on Father's Day.
Yelchin was pinned by his own car and a brick mailbox pillar attached to a security gate in his house in San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, California, in the early morning of June 19, Sunday, TMZ has learned. He was supposed to meet his friends for a rehearsal.
According to authorities, the car was in neutral and the engine was running when Yelchin's body was found. The driveway was said to be on a quite steep incline.
The authorities said it was not clear why the "Star Trek Beyond" actor got out of his car. They also did not suspect foul play.
Prior to playing the role of Chekov in "Star Trek Beyond," Yelchin was known for playing Kyle Reese in "Terminator Salvation" in 2009. He also played Charley Brewster in "Fight Night" in 2011.
It was also in 2009 when Yelchin played Chekov for the first time. He reprised the role in "Star Trek Into Darkness" in 2013.
Aside from "Star Trek Beyond," Yelchin is also set to star in the romantic drama film "Porto" with Lucie Lucas and Chantal Akerman. In 2017, Yelchin is also starring with Olivie Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy in the thriller drama film "Thoroughbred," which is written and directed by Cory Finley.
Directed by Justin Lin, "Star Trek Beyond" also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, Sofia Boutella, John Cho and Simon Pegg as Captain Kirk, Commander Spock, Bones, Krall, Uhura, Jaylah, Sulu and Scotty, respectively. Pegg is also one of the writers of the action sci-fi film.
On July 7, Lin will be accompanied by Pine, Quinto and Urban at the red carpet at the "Star Trek Beyond" premiere at Hoyts Entertainment Quarter in Sydney, Australia, Sydney Morning Herald reported. In 2013, Pine, Quinto and Urban also visited Australia for "Star Trek Into Darkness."
