The NBA free agency is not just for teams at the bottom. The San Antonio Spurs did not become the best managed sports franchise by resting on their laurels.

After what was perceived as an early exit for a team that won 67 games in the regular season, the Spurs want to make some improvements. One of them involves adding another frontline piece.

Pau Gasol could be on his last playing years and he has officially become a free agent. His decision is pivotal and his priorities would come into play. Does he want the biggest money contract? Does he want another title or take one last chance at playing with his brother the whole season?

The Spurs want to find out as they plan to pursue the Spaniard in free agency as mentioned by Adrian Wokjnarowski of The Vertical in their podcast (h/t CBS Sports)

"I'm told that Pau Gasol is a real priority for them," Wojnarowski said. "They tried to get him before he signed with Chicago. The Bulls were able to offer him a little bit more than the mid-level that year, I think the Spurs had a mid-level for him. They can maneuver in San Antonio and probably be able to offer him market value. We'll see what that's going to be."

San Antonio is mired deep in the pursuit of Kevin Durant but it would be prudent for them to consider other possibilities. With the free agency race wide open because of the salary cap, the Spurs would be more equipped to entice free agents who want to win more than getting the max.

That could be a reason why the Spurs have seemingly backed off the race for Mike Conley, the best point guard prospect among the 2016 free agents. As reported by Marc Stein on Twitter, they were not really so high on him in the first place.

It's almost certain that Conley would get the max offer from other teams and the Spurs have to trade away some of its core players to match that. San Antonio may not feel it's worth it, they'll trade away players only for Durant. Also, they drafted a good point guard with the 29th pick in Dejounte Murray.
