Google owned Boston Dynamics, known for building a four-legged robot called BigDog, has developed a new mechanical robot named Spot, Techcrunch reported.
BigDog's four mechanical legs enable it to walk in places where a bipedal or wheeled robot can't. BigDog is quite independent and the working models aren't tethered to a wire. Its head like sensor enables the mechanical dog to navigate its way over both even and uneven surface.
Boston Dynamics has built a smaller and lighter version of BigDog's -- a sibling named Spot. The younger brother only weighs 160 lbs compared to its big brother's 240 lbs.
Both robots, however, have the same characteristics like four legs, a head with a sensor and the capability of keeping its balance while traversing rough terrain or even climbing slopes.
The Verge reported that while the name Spot is a dog's name, this robot walks more like a horse. In a Boston Dynamics YouTube video, viewers can see Spot being kicked by the staff but is able to remain upright and continue walking. Spot's sensors prevent it from being tipped over by kicks.
Because of its lighter weight, Spot can beat BigDog in a race. Its bigger brother, however, can carry heavier loads.
While BigDog is a beast of burden, Spot is more like a rescue dog.
Spot can navigate its way both indoors and outdoors. It can also be used for search and rescue operations. Spot can also help and lead rescuers inside calamity areas. For example, humans can send Spot to blown out or burning buildings with minimal risk to them.
Boston Dynamics was bought by Google in 2013. The company is one of the leaders in robotics. Its robots show great promise in both civilian and military application.
