Since NBC announced its interest in making "Cruel Intentions" sequel, fans of the 1999 film top billed by star Sarah Michelle Gellar have been left clueless on when it is going to happen. However, fans should not give up hoping to see the 1990s' teen romance film on the TV screen because NBC is still pursuing the pilot and hoping to air it in the summer of 2017.

NBC requested for cast option extension for the entire cast, including its lead star Kathryn Merteuil (Gellar). The network is still trying to figure out the right season to air the pilot, but it looks like "Cruel Intentions" may pick up for a summer 2017 debut. The project was not able to fit into the network's fall 2016 lineup because of its full schedule.

While the network is delaying to make a decision, Sony TV, the studio behind the drama/ thriller film is reportedly receiving interest from other outlets such as Hulu and Freeform, according to Variety. Despite several interests from them, NBC was able to keep the project. It is not surprising because NBC has a good relationship with Sony TV, which entrusted other projects including "Timeless" and "The Blacklist: Redemption" to the network.

Gellar confirmed the news that NBC still holds the project on her Twitter. In her post, she remained positive about the NBC pilot.

In May, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt cleared why "Cruel Intentions" did not make it in an earlier lineup during a press conference. He added that the project came at the time when they have too many scheduled shows.

"It goes under the heading of embarrassment of riches," Deadline quoted Greenblatt as saying. "There's just so many shows that we have scheduled or ordered. Still, we like it, and we're still discussing it and trying to figure it out."

"Cruel Intentions" sequel continues the story of Kathryn as she controls Valmont International and Bash Casey, the son of her brother late Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Philippe) and Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). The story follows the character of Bash as he explores the real world. Other cast members include Taylor John Smith, Coby Bell, Samantha Logan, Kate Levering, Sophina Brown and Bryce Cass.
