Mafia III is shaping up to be a huge departure over the previous games as the player will determine how the city of Bordeaux will work in terms of the criminal rackets and underbosses.
The previous Mafia II game did not give players enough free time to explore the virtual city, let alone try to change it. Developer Hangar 13 is now saying that Mafia III's city conditions will largely depend on protagonist Lincoln Clay's actions throughout the game.
Sandbox games are great as players can explore what's in store for them. However, a better feature would be to change how the city itself works from certain mechanics.
Mafia III will put the player in tough spots as they need to decide which of the three underbosses they will keep happy for the duration of the game, The Bitbag has learned. An underboss who isn't kept happy can turn into an opposing force for Lincoln Clay.
Hangar 13 has revealed that Lincoln Clay will be able to take on the different criminal rackets and to take over by attacking their base of operations and killing the enforcer. If the player fails to take over the first time, the subsequent attempts will be even harder as more thugs and guards will be protecting the turf.
Mafia II protagonist Vito will be one of the underbosses in Mafia III, Kotaku reported. The other two underbosses include Burke and Cassandra. The player would have to balance them all out if he or she does not want to make another enemy.
Giving one criminal racket to an underboss can make the other two angry at Lincoln Clay. Players will have to pick a side or to make them all happy if they want to make it through the game with as little difficulty as possible.
Mafia III Game Director Haden Blackman said that one of their goals was to make the player choose between loyalty to one underboss or greed to get everything and anything in the game. Of course, one underboss would certainly have a benefit over the other and vice-versa.
The game was first revealed at E3 2016 and it will be launched on October 7. Mafia III will be available for the PC, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.
