Chinese police officers are set to receive better pay and benefits. This is in consideration of the daily, occupational risks they face.
More than 2 million police officers in China can enjoy an increase in their pay and benefits. This is one more strategy to ensure police officers would be more satisfied with their jobs and perform better.
The new guidelines highlighted that because of the risks and pressures they face, the daily wages should be higher than the civil officials, but lower than the military personnel.
The government recognizes that civil officials and public security officers should have different pay structure because they do not face the same rigors and demands in their jobs.
According to the Ministry of Public Security, police officers can be harmed or killed in line of their duties. In 2013, 449 officers died on duty and 4,226 were injured doing their jobs.
"It's necessary to distinguish public security officers from civil servants, as the former tackle both administrative affairs and judicial ones," said Dai Peng, director of the Criminal Investigation College at the People's Public Security University of China.
"The latest measure, I think, has pointed out the future direction for the police, improving their work efficiency and ensuring law enforcement," he added.
The increase in wages and benefits is part of a wider measure to ensure police officers would not lose their integrity and credibility, which takes place when they accept bribes because of their insufficient compensation.
The move is also expected to ensure a more professional and efficient police force.
