A status page on the United States Patent and Trademark Office recently had a message saying that Sony Computer Entertainment America had abandoned its trademark to the exclusive PlayStation game "The Last Guardian."
USPTO said Sony decided to abandon the trademark citing the reason "no Statement of Use or Extension Request" after the office issued a "Notice of Allowance," according to a report from GameSpot. The report added that Sony has not yet issued an official statement about the news.
When news about the abandonment spread through the tech community, many speculations were quickly made. One possibility is that Sony might be considering renaming the game.
Many reliable video-game forums, however, claim the game has been cancelled, although Sony has yet to confirm this, Metro reported.
The most recent significant news about the status of "The Last Guardian" circulated in December 2014 when the game's director, Fumito Ued,a revealed in an interview the project is still ongoing and under "completely new conditions."
What Ueda mean by this led many to believe the game might be transitioning into the newer PlayStation 4 platform instead of the PlayStation 3. This news sparked speculation Sony was still looking forward to realizing the project.
"The Last Guardian" has been in development since 2007. The game was formally announced during the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2009 with a targeted release date for 2011. It is an exclusive PlayStation 3 game.
The game is the third venture of Team Ico, the same game developer that produced classic and critically-acclaimed PlayStation 2 games "Ico" and "Shadow of the Colossus."
