AMD fans can now buy a whole desktop with the new Radeon RX 480 card for just the current price of a single GTX 1080 card which costs around $850 today due to price gouging.
The $199 Radeon RX 480 card is a good deal for average gamers playing with their 1080p monitors. Some opt for a GTX 1080 instead but the high price tag today scares some buyers off plus the supply issue does not certainly help.
After the June 29 launch of the Radeon RX 480, there have been some pre-built desktop computers going on sale for the price of one GTX 1080 card today. Best Buy has a $850 CyberPowerPC Desktop AMD build with the RX 480 and a decent FX 8320 for the processor plus 16GB DDR3 RAM, PC World has learned. It also comes with a 2TB hard drive to install all of the games that the user wants to benchmark.
There is also a cheaper $800 NE648RX desktop computer build on Newegg. The pre-built desktop has an AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB, a 1TB hard drive and an Intel Core i5-6400 CPU. A cheaper $750 build is also available on Amazon with an even more powerful RX 480 8GB card which is interesting.
The problem is that most of the desktop builds that will be on sale in the next few days will not be shipping for the next month or two. However, it is a great deal for those who are just starting out for a gaming PC and not for those who want an expensive GTX 1080 or GTX 1070.
AMD has recently fixed the Radeon RX 480 power draw issues with their Crimson 16.7.1 driver update, PC Gamer reported. All users have to do is to download the driver to automatically fix the problem.
Pre-built desktop computers with the GTX 1080 are available too but they are several hundred dollars more expensive. The Chronos build from Origins PC with the GTX 1080 and the Intel Z170 chipset starts at more than $1300.
Falcon Northwest Computer is also selling their Fragbox with the GTX 1080 and Intel Z170 chipset which easily shoots for $2376 on just an Intel i5 6500 processor. However, it is worth noting that the GTX 1080 card alone makes it worth it for 4K,1440p and VR gaming.
Users who are budget-conscious would probably buy the $750 to $850 desktop computers with the AMD Radeon RX 480 video card. Those who want the best performance would want to buy the $1300 onwards GTX 1080 desktop computers instead.
