As speculated by several sources, the entire line-up of the Macbook Air will be discontinued in the near future. But other news strongly suggest the Air will still continue in production as several key features are speculated to come with the next generation of the said device. Though the Air will continue in production, it was said that its 11-inch variant will be discontinued.
Despite all the on-going rumors, Apple did not confirm nor deny any of these. Since the 11-inch variant will be discontinued, Apple has been reported to focus more on the 13-inch and 15-inch models and the Cupertino-based company would be producing a 12-inch variant in replacement to the 11-inch type, according to a Japanese website named Mac Otakara.
The said 12-inch model will be thinner and lighter than the 11-inch but will be minimally less powerful. Since it has been an on-going trend for devices to adapt the USB Type-C port, it is expected that the Macbook Air will be removing their type A port and older Thunderbolt and Magsafe ports.
Despite all the speculations about the features that may come along the Macbook Pro, one glaring rumor is that the said line-up will halt in production. KGI Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that both the 11-inch and 13-inch models will stop receiving upgrades since Apple will be focusing more on the Pro models, Neuro Gadget reported.
On a positive note, some still believes that the Macbook Air will continue in production. It is rumored that the new version will sport a 5K display, an OLED touch display bar, a lightning port that will replace the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack and an AMD Radeon RX 400 series video card.
Although unconfirmed, it is expected that the 2016 Macbook Air will be launched alongside the iPhone 7 in September. Since the release date is still a few months away, Apple may be planning to conduct an announcement or confirmation of any of the speculations in the coming months. Time can only tell when some of the specifications will be given in detail.
