Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green was arrested on Sunday in East Lansing, Michigan and he is facing assault charges. According to the latest rumors, Green could receive a fine and a suspension from the NBA if he would be found guilty.
Police arrested Green after an altercation with a man at Conrad's Grill, a restaurant in East Lansing. There were no injuries and the 26-year-old was released the same day on a $200 bond, ESPN reported. However, he is still facing a maximum of 93 days in a prison and a $500 fine if he is convicted.
The arraignment for Green's case is scheduled on July 20 and he is expected to plead not guilty. A court date will then be set and he will not likely serve any jail time. But this issue can potentially hurt his professional career regarding the Warriors, the NBA and the USA Olympic Basketball Team.
According to Sports Illustrated, the Warriors may discipline Green for his conduct that is detrimental to the team. The NBA can also give him a maximum fine of $50,000 and suspension of 12 games if found guilty of charges.
The good news for Green is that both Golden State and the NBA unlikely suspend him for the incident since he is just facing a minor charge. He has only been arrested for a simple assault charge and not an aggravated one.
Nonetheless, his arrest can impact his standing for the upcoming Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 5 to 21. Even though he will not lose his spot on the 12-man roster, the United States Olympic committee will review his case.
The Warriors, the league and the Olympic committee have already confirmed the arrest. It should be noted that Green was only arrested and he has not been found guilty of assaulting a man. This is a minor situation but since he plays for the Warriors, it is huge news.
Athletes like Green, who is known to be an emotional person on the floor, made a slight mistake outside of it. He is a native of Michigan and has done a lot for the community. He also donated $3.1 million to his alma mater, Michigan State, in 2015.
