Ray Enterprises recently revealed its Ray Super Remote, a universal remote control with touch screen.
The Ray Super Remote's target market consists of home owners frustrated by too many remotes for their appliances and devices.
The Ray Super Remote can control TVs, Blu-ray and DVD players, cable boxes, receivers and soundbars, and streaming devices like Apple TV, Roku, Xbox One and Xbox 360. Ray Enterprises claims the remote control is compatible with more than 1,200 brands and 200,000 devices.
The remote was developed out of the desire to unify living room devices.
"The Ray Super Remote grew out of my frustration that despite living in the Golden Age of television, I was struggling to find content across proliferating platforms and using a multitude of archaic TV remote controls to do so," said David Skokna, CEO of Ray Enterprises.
In addition, Skokna says he also wanted the Ray Super Remote to deliver personalized search and discovery tools to help users find new content.
The Ray Super Remote measures 5.5 inches high and 2.5 inches wide and weighs 6 oz. It has a 4.8-inch display with a resolution of 1,120 x 480 and an aspect ratio of 21:9.
Overall, the design is long and sleek, according to Gigaom. The site adds that it looks like a remote sans the buttons which have been replaced by a touchscreen.
The remote is powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1 GHz with 8 GB of flash memory storage. It features infrared, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Zigbee capabilities.
It houses a built-in rechargeable lithium ion 2,550 mAh battery. Although Ray Enterprises didn't provide an estimated battery life, Digital Trends say it could possibly last for one whole day.
The way this remote is charged reminds Gigaom of how Apple charges its devices. That is, the device comes with magnets that gently lock in place to the charging stand.
The Ray Super Remote sells for $199 on pre-order. The device will be available by "late spring."
