The success of "Descendants of the Sun" has not dwindled even months after the last episode aired. Up to now, fans still clamor to see more of the "Song Song couple" and there's still growing public demand for a Season 2 run of the hit drama series. In response to this outpouring of support, KBS hinted that the possible "DOTS" project may be slated for 2017.
head for KBS's drama department Jung Sung Ho revealed that the broadcast network is planning to do a "Descendants of the Sun" project next year to give back to the fans who supported Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki's drama series.
"KBS will strive to produce a second 'Descendants of the Sun' to meet expectations and repay viewers," Jung said, reported Soompi. "We plan to launch a 'Descendants of the Sun' project for broadcast in 2017 through negotiations with the cast and production team."
It wasn't clear as to what the project will be or what the plot is if ever it turns out to be a follow-up to the high-rating drama series. "Descendants of the Sun" screenwriter Kim Eun Sok's participation in the project is still up in the air, as she previously stated that she does not intend to create a sequel.
Among the other considerations that need to be met before production can commence is that all the other cast members from the original "Descendants of the Sun" are able to reprise their roles in "DOTS" Season 2.
It is presumed, however, that the "Descendants of the Sun" Season 2 will most likely make way for the supporting couple, Jin Goo and Kim Ji Won. Now that Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki have attained their happily ever after, it would be interesting to see how love will unfold for the "Goo Won" couple.
As a matter of fact, Jin Goo is supportive of the idea. According to Soompi, Jin Goo said he'd be happy to do another "Descendants of the Sun" story with Kim Ji Won if the viewers would allow it.
In the meantime, Song Joong Ki's busy schedule may not permit him to commit to a "Descendants of the Sun" sequel any time soon. He's currently preparing for his role in the upcoming historical film "Battleship Island."
