There is a third wheel to the theme park giant in China. Disney, the company behind the Shanghai Disneyland, is the first giant. The second is Dalian Wanda which plans to build more theme parks across China.
On Wednesday, a third theme park giant was introduced when Six Flags Entertainment Group revealed plans to construct the Chongqing Riverside-Six Flags Theme Park worth $4.48 billion, or 30 billion yuan.
According to China Daily, it would be the first international theme park in the western part of China. John Duffey, president and CEO of Six Flags Entertainment, said the company chose Chongqing to build the theme park because of the city’s significant population, growing middle class, increasing disposable income and limited theme park presence.
Six Park has partnered with Riverside Group, based in Beijing. On Wednesday, the two inked a framework cooperation agreement with the government of Chongqing Bishan.
Six Park has another 30-billion-yuan project in Haiyan, Zhejiang Province, making the Chongqing park its second.
According to South China Morning Post, Chongqing has been trying to attract international theme park brands to the city, but Walt Disney officials refused to confirm reports it was looking for a potential site for a Disneyland in western China.
Despite the recent opening of Disney’s and Dalian’s theme parks in China, Duffey believes there is enough room for other companies to build more theme parks in China. He differentiated Six Flag parks from Disney’s, pointing to record-breaking coasters and breathtaking thrills for all types of visitors.
“Having multiple players build theme parks in China will help the overall industry grow and provide multiple entertainment options for local families and teens,” Duffey said.
