Ivanka Trump has been criticized for selling clothes made in China and Vietnam, while her father, Republican Party presidential candidate, speaks against Americans losing their jobs to Mexicans and other third world nations.
The disconnect between what politicians promise during campaign period and what they do when elected to public office must have been the reason why a growing number of singers are asking the politicians not to use their songs without their permission. E! News reported that John Oliver has gathered famous musicians to appear in a video clip titled “Don’t Use Our Song” to deliver their strong message of disallowing the use of their songs at political conventions.
On top of the list, Oliver cited Donald Trump who used a Queen song. Other musicians who have joined the video clip include Usher, Sheryl Crow, Josh Groban and Cyndi Lauper.
The lyrics of the song goes, “But we notice something’s wrong and it’s gone on way too long / So we’re asking you right now stop using our songs.” Lauper adds, “Stop using our music that’s our one and only rule.”
The musicians stressed they did not write those songs to make the politician’s campaign look cool. They equated the illegal use of their songs to stealing and hinted of filing lawsuits in the future if the intellectual property rights breaches continue.
Oliver made the appeal during his “Last Week Tonight” show on Sunday when he also criticized the way how the Republican National Convention was run. He called the entire Cleveland convention a “mismanaged shitshow” and stated, “It was a four-day exercise in emphasizing feelings over facts, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
